Amy Jade Winehouse  was born in Chase Farm Hospital in north London.

Many of Winehouse's maternal uncles were professional jazz musicians and influenced Amy's interest in jazz. Winehouse's father Mitchell was a taxi driver and jazz enthusiast who would often sing songs to his daughter as she grew up. He remained one of her fiercest fans — as well as critic at times. He developed a musical career of his own and was in New York at the time of her death.

At the age of 10, Amy Winehouse formed the rap group with her best friend, Juliette Ashby. Winehouse described Sweet 'N' Sour as being the "little white Jewish Salt-n-Pepa" and that she was "Sour." She didn't aspire to be a musician, though; instead, she fantasized about being a roller-skating waitress like the ones she'd seen in 'American Graffiti.

At the age of 12, Winehouse was accepted into the prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School. Winehouse bought her own guitar and started to write music, and thanks in part to a former boyfriend who sent a tape to an A&R man, she snagged a contract with Island/Universal and a publishing deal with EMI.

During a photo shoot with Terry Richardson, Amy Winehouse took a glass shard that was meant to be used as a prop and carved "i love Blake" into her stomach. Blake Fielder-Civil was her fiancé of two weeks at the time.

Her debut album, Frank (2003), was a critically acclaimed mixture of jazz, pop, soul and hip-hop. Amy Winehouse won five Grammy Awards for her 2006 album Back to Black, and is remembered for songs like "Rehab," "Back to Black" and "Valerie." Despite releasing only two albums, she had received much acclaim from around the world.

Amy Winehouse had as many as 11 cats at one time. Amy often claimed she wanted to leave all her money to a cats' home as an ultimate sign of rebellion.

Amy was found dead in her Camden home by a member of her security team on 23 July 2011. The cause of death was established as accidental alcohol poisoning.
